Kids Sea Camp in Grand Bahama Announced

Grand Bahama has been chosen to be the newest addition of locations for an innovative and exciting kind of summer camp focused around the ocean: Kids Sea Camp. The event is being co-hosted by several organizations: Pelican Bay, The Ministry of Tourism and UNEXSO located in Port Lucaya and will take place August 9-16, 2008. Kids Sea Camp has been active since 2001 in such remote islands as Fiji, Galapagos, Grand Cayman, BonAire, Roatan and now Grand Bahama Island.

WWII Shipwrecks in Thai Waters at Risk

A Canadian marine archaeologist has asked the Government of Thailand to crack down on scuba divers who loot important historical shipwrecks in the Kingdom. In a letter to Consul General Kosit Chatpaiboon, of the Royal Thai Consulate General in Vancouver, Canadian marine archaeologist Rob Rondeau asked that Thailand declare several archaeologically important shipwreck sites in the Gulf of Thailand off-limits to recreational divers.  And he wants a charter boat company, based from the resort island of Koh Tao, investigated for looting and violating international maritime law.

Hundreds of Lake Erie charter boats are making room for a new passenger this season — Big Brother. Americans who cross into Canadian waters to fish or scuba dive will face a boatload of new security requirements when charter season begins in several weeks. Among them: interviews with unseen customs officers on videophones operated by the government.

Shark Attack in Bahamas

Eric Cheng from Wetpixel.com has published a press release from 'the Shark Angels' explaining the details of a fatal shark attack which happened in Bahamas yesterday (02/25/08).  The scuba diver involved, Markus Groh, was fatally wounded while diving from the M/V Shearwater. Some news outlets incorrectly reported the attack to be off Fort Lauderdale.

Former Canadian resident and ‘Diver’ Magazine contributor Cris Kohl has won a prestigious dive award.  ‘Our World-Underwater’, a Chicago based dive exhibition, announced in February that Cris Kohl has won their annual dive award.

Wrapping up the old year and looking forward to new records in 2008 for underwater firsts!
Ho Hum. Another month, another underwater world record.
The ongoing chronicles of underwater feats ranging from the impressive to the dubious. The rush to establish new underwater records has subsided, at least temporarily, as winter approaches in the Northern Hemisphere. However, there were a number of subsurface records set in the fall of 2007.
