Grand Bahama has been chosen to be the newest addition of locations for an innovative and exciting kind of summer camp focused around the ocean: Kids Sea Camp. The event is being co-hosted by several organizations: Pelican Bay, TheMinistry of Tourism and UNEXSO located in Port Lucaya and will take place August 9-16, 2008. Kids Sea Camp has been active since 2001 in such remote islands as Fiji, Galapagos, Grand Cayman, BonAire, Roatan and now Grand Bahama Island.

The design of this program, unlike most summer camps, is to provide a vacation for the entire family. A full week of scheduled events allows children to be active in four groups dependent on their swimming and scuba diving abilities. In addition they participate in educational classes daily and dolphin activities at the Dolphin Experience. Parents are able to enjoy their day's scuba diving, or for the non diver, enjoying the islands various other tours, shopping and activities. At the ends of each day families reunite to enjoy fun dining activities together. Other events throughout the week will include a Junkanoo and "Bahamian Ting" festival, art auction to raise money for local charities, a dinner cruise and a pizza and movie night for the kids.

One of the great features of Kids Sea Camp is their willingness to give back to the community. So, for their opening year on Grand Bahama Island Kids Sea Camp, along with Pelican Bay and UNEXSO, are donating openings for two deserving kids of Grand Bahama to participate in the daily activities of the camp. These two kids will take part in one of two programs, the first, PADI Jr. Open Water Certification, will allow a youngster to explore the world underwater. After the week long program he or she will be a certified diver able to discover to depths of 45 feet. The second program, PADI Seals Team, is an introduction to scuba diving. Kids will complete five Aqua Missions in UNEXSO's pool while familiarizing themselves with scuba equipment.

If your child or someone you know is interested in applying to be one of the two Grand Bahamian children selected to participate in this great summer program, please have the child submit an essay of at least 100 words and answering the question, "Why the Ocean is Important to Us?". All submissions must be addressed to Nikki Waugh at Unexso, accompanied with a photograph, telephone number, local address, school, age and must be in by May 5, 2008.
