The US Navy is currently building two dry-cargo supply ships in San Diego. One of the ships will be named the Brashear in honour of the late Navy diver Carl Brashear.  The USNS Brashear will be similar to the dry-cargo supply ship USNS Amelia Earhart [pictured] launched last year.

According to the US Navy Newspaper, the Union Tribune, “Carl Brashear joined the Navy in 1948, was the service's first African American deep-sea diver and the first diver to return to duty after losing a limb. He retired in 1979 and was portrayed in the 2000 movie "Men of Honor".

The christening and launch of USNS Carl Brashear (T-AKE 7) will take place on Thursday morning, September 18, 2008, at the NASSCO Shipyard in San Diego, California and will be open to the public.
